The last resort of a rogue is patriotism or in the case of Brexit, sovereignty. Now that it is so very clear how much economic, social, political and diplomatic damage Brexit has caused even the die hards are giving up on the “it is a triumph” lie and resorting to “it was all about regaining sovereignty and so was a success.”
This is the kind of circular and disingenuous argument you might expect from this crowd. Forget the money, the fishing, the better deal, the German car companies, we left so it was a success.
For this to be a sufficient reason for Brexit you have to believe that the UK had lost its sovereignty in the EU, was no more than a province like Bavaria or Wales, or to use the Brexiteers own argument “a slave state”.
This is of course utter rubbish, all EU states are sovereign, they just share and pool strictly limited powers because it suits them and multiplies their wealth, power and influence.
They must be the only slaves that can win their independence by asking to leave, the idea that any of them could be prevented from going if they wanted to is mad.
The UK always had its own foreign policy, armed forces, parliament, sovereign, and nuclear deterrent.
But the killer question that shows this to be a total lie is this; how many journalists did news organisation, even eurosceptic ones, have in Brussels compared to Westminster?
The BBC had three, and hundreds in Westminster, most newspapers had one compared to dozens in Westminster. Not to mention all the business, defence, health and diplomatic reporters who seemed to think basing themselves in London was important because that was where the news was.
Why if Brussels was the real centre of power, the capital of Europe, the slave master did so few editors ever feel the need to report from there on all the vital decisions that were being made there and forced on an unwilling UK?
Because it was and is a lie. The cabinet ministers in London for defence, health, housing, the treasury and all the others had far more power than the EU, and they know it.
Just count how many hacks the Mail, Express, Telegraph and Times sent to Brussels.
On a happier note a Happy New Year to you all and thanks for reading my blog. I hope you enjoy it and that we can discuss some happier news in 2023.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

Isn't the real measure of national sovereignty how much influence the nation can exert in its own interest? Every EU member state has greater influence, both individually and collectively, as a consequence of its membership. In this sense the UK's sovereignty has been hugely diminished by its departure from the EU.
