Cop out....
Let’s not beat about the bush, COP26 failed. China and India left enough space to drive a coach and horses through, other nations will continue to use energy irresponsibly.
The last point explains why China and India held out, why should they pay for the mess made by the West? All the damage has been done by the developed world which burnt coal, gas and oil with abandon for centuries, to industrialise and make themselves the richest countries the world has ever seen.
Now they turn round and say it’s the developing world that has to stop using energy, when they still use just a small proportion of what we do in the west.
Politics seems incapable of solving this conundrum not least because rich countries voters still want cheap energy and lots of it and resist nearly all calls to do something about it.
Just look at the fuel escalator in the UK, Chancellors now boast about not increasing it.
Why should China and India listen to the West? Why should they pay for our damage?
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
