What is the opposite of nominative determinism?
What ever it is the UK’s Foreign Secretary is a perfect example.
Let’s just walk through his recent efforts.
Ahead of a meeting with his German counterpart, he briefed the press that Germany is not as wedded to the Irish cause as previously thought and might abandon Dublin over the issue of the NIP. The meeting is then cancelled because of ice on the runway (right) and Germany, of course, issues a statement which basically says there isn’t room for a cigarette paper between them and their Irish besties.
Even if Mr Cleverly was right, and he was almost certainly wrong, this was exactly what Germany was forced to do by his actions.
So either he was insultingly stupid as regards German intentions or so stupid that he forced them to retreat from supporting London and throw all their considerable weight behind Ireland.
Does anyone really think that the Germany, let alone the EU, is going to abandon a member state, back down in the face of threats to break international law, hack off Washington and destroy an agreement the UK begged for?
Rather stupidly, the Foreign Secretary does.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
