The news these days reminds me of the almost certainly apocryphal story about Abraham Lincoln.

During the Civil War the North sent In administrators to run captured Southern areas. Many were far too easily corrupted by Southern money so President Lincoln sent an old friend of unimpeachable honesty.

Within a few months this appointee was begging to be sent home on the grounds that the offers were getting too large for even him to resist.

Fast forward to today’s billionaires and dodgy states with almost unlimited funds.

Where are the men of principles who even pretend to stand up to them? Who refuses to sell their newspapers, their companies or their skills to such people.

Power corrupts over time but billions corrupt C.O.D.
