Cartoons matter

Jenrick and the rest of the Tory party are in a bind, a bind of their own making. The same man who tried to make his name in the party by being an utter bastard to asylum seekers and their children, now claims that Muslims chanting Allahu Akbar should be arrested. or, maybe not, as he is rowing backwards at a rate that would win him a gold in Paris.

Apparently he didn’t know the words “God is great”, are part of a devout Muslins prayers 5 times a day, not some jihadist call to action. You might think a potential leader of the Tory party and PM might have checked his facts, or even known this already given the Nazis rioting that is sweeping the country.

It illustrates perfectly the conundrum for the Tories and they deserve all of it. Try to move ever rightward by blaming liberal lawyers for your own failures, call asylum seekers invaders and ramp up the pressure by deliberately delaying the processing of desperate asylum seekers. throw in a few references to flooding the country, vermin, ISIS and all in an attempt to stop your racist voters deserting you, and failing at that.

Then you stand around going “What me?”.

We have become used to this sort of thing over the last 8 years but it used to be utterly unacceptable, beyond the pale, the space the BNP lived in, the politics of Enoch Powell, the pathetic rantings of elderly Tory bigots when in their cups.

But it was Brexit that made racism acceptable and usable, the Brexiteers used it, and the unprincipled saw that it worked, just once.

They then used it because they are totally immoral and thought it would help them win again, it was and is shameless. Not least because so many of the senior members of the party, including the former PM Rishi Sunak, are not considered by these Nazis mobs to be British at all. In fact they really wouldn’t admit that Sunak had ever been PM, because he is not white enough.

The current leadership candidates could see what is happening and change tack immediately, condemn their racist members, denounce the rioters, throw out their members who are encouraging mass murder, admit their crass stupidity and the fact that they played the race card, that they whipped up hate and bigotry.

But no, they are hedging their bets, vacillating, undermining the law and the police, giving a thin skin of justification to the rioters, claiming they are mislead and have real grievances that need addressing. They even attack terrified Muslims, and then claim their is two tier policing in this country.

Sycophantically sucking up to Musk doesn’t look so clever now, does it.

The painting over of cartoons designed to help terrified, homeless, children, in an attempt to look like more of a bastard than your fellow Tories should have been the final sign, the trip wire, the bridge too far. It should have been a firing issue, the sure fire sign that things had gone too far, it was instead seen as a badge of honour, a smart move in the race for the leadership.

The party of law and order, of decency, of concern, of peaceful parliamentary debate, yeah right!

They are very, very lucky Parliament has not been recalled, the evidence is all there, Keir Starmer will use it ruthlessly.

They have sold their birthright for a mess of potage, for all the good it will do them.
