I have had the first long motorway drive without major delays this week, the first time for months if not years and all down to luck.
Normally it is just pure weight of traffic that causes snarl up and queues, that and the endless roadworks designed to produce so-called “smart motorways”.
They are a cunning plan to increase capacity by making it possible to drive on the hard shoulder and cost billions to install. They were however cheaper than just increasing motorway capacity by building more or better motorways.
As any sensible traffic expert could have told you the result has been endless delays caused by the road works on existing motorways which have built a system that is a death trap. All to cut some of the up front spending.
No one’s head will roll, no one will admit it has all been a waste of money, that they have actually made driving more dangerous not less or that it will all have to be done again properly at a later date.
You get what you pay for.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

Ditto the national grid infrastructure, HS2, northern railways, aircraft carriers (and the planes to go on them), etc. 13 years, and counting, and not a whole lot to show for it …
