Brinkmanship Boris style
It seems that the UK government is letting it be known to its friends in the media that it is ASKING the EU for an extension to the grace period on sending chilled meat products to Northern Ireland.
Strangely the EU doesn’t seem to have received the request, but then governments like to get their spin in first. But this is a back down by the UK government, which was threatening to take unilateral action, action which the EU would have found it impossible to ignore. This is what happens when Brexit reality meets Brexit fantasy, in the real world reality always wins.
Meanwhile I was wondering about the Australian trade deal and the import of meat and other products duty free which do not meet EU standards. What happens to UK food manufacturers which export to the EU, a far larger market? Surely the EU will insist that UK firms that want to continue to export to its citizens, prove that there is not a single trace of Aussie ingredients in their products.
