Breaking conventions
Since the Tory government has broken so many political conventions recently, lying to parliament, threatening to break international law and tearing up seriously negotiated treaties, being the most obvious, I have a modest proposal.
Let the next government publish the advice that ministers of this government have received.
Perhaps we could have the advice on where PPE should have been bought from, the advice on the huge fraud involved and how to get the money back, the Covid loans that have not been repaid in their tens of billions, and the economic consequences of Brexit.
We know what the last one will say since government ministers have stopped claiming it is making the economy stronger just that Brexit “is on the past” or “people voted for it”.
A sure sign they know the truth and let’s face it if HM Treasury are not doing the calculations almost every week about how much poorer we are, where the tax revenue is NOT coming from and so on, they are not doing their job.
So let’s publish it and be damned, it will have to wait until after the election but what an interesting sight it will be.
Surely ministers are not hiding behind that tired old convention that the advice they receive must be kept secret, to hide the truth and the appalling consequences of their actions and their refusal to deal with reality?
So what do they have to lose?
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
