Bread and circuses...
There are ten people who think that there are the right person to lead the Conservative party. I’d like to be able to say that one of them is right, but that doesn’t necessarily follow.
I don’t think any of them have any idea what they will inherit when they get to the top of the greasy pole. UK firms are battening down the hatches for another recession. Households are already suffering, government cuts are hurting everywhere and people are going hungry.
Another recession after 14 years of pathetic growth and the two worst recessions in economic history is once again going to hurt the most vulnerable most. The gap between how wealthy people should be now, if the economy had been managed well, and where they are now, gets ever wider. Finally the electorate will notice.
All the Tory candidates have therefore decided to pick a fight with the EU, the natural reaction in a crisis, if you are a Brexiteer that it.
Brexit is becoming the circus bit of bread and circuses, the traditional Roman way of keeping the mob happy. But remember it is BREAD and circuses not just a distraction but food on the plate as well.
Emperors incapable of providing both did not last long.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
