If you spend months after a general election telling everyone how bad things are, what gaping holes in the government’s finances you have found and that the nation is going to have to bite the bullet, then you can hardly be surprised when the “animal spirits” of the economy seem strangely dimmed.
The fact is that the biggest mistake the government has made since the election was not to have an emergency budget with two weeks of the result. Blaming the Tories gets harder the further you are away from the election, the fact that with their pet press on board the Tories managed to do it for 14 years is no guarantee that Labour will be able to do it for 14 days or weeks.
The shameless opportunism of the Conservatives, blaming everything from crime to inadequate defence on the new government doesn’t help, but they can easily be made to look daft and people are not so dumb as to believe that everything was working well only a few months ago, when it obviously wasn’t.
Today Mark Francois is claiming that the fact that 15% of our Armed Forces aren’t fit enough to fit is a national scandal, it is and it is a Tory national scandal; they haven’t all got hurty feet in the last few months, this has been going on for years.
So my Xmas present for the government is this, get the bad news out now, blame the Tories and remember it is 4 years until the next election.
Then BOR, bugger on regardless.

Only 4 years and 6 months and Reform take over. Then we can stop illegal migration send a good load of the back stop paying benefits to the rest and then we may have some money to pay pensioners and build our armed forces.
