As predicted the Brexiteers are now denying that the rioting in NI is anything to do with them. I particularly enjoy the “this is the remainer’s fault for not backing Brexit” theme. The trouble with that argument is that many remainers were willing to compromise and back a Brexit deal, based on Norway’s relationship with the EU.
Not in the EU but in the single market, part of lots of EU schemes which would be to the UK’s benefit such as chemicals regulation, Erasmus and University research but able to negotiate its own trade deals. This is after all what many campaigners for Brexit said they would settle for, until the day after the referendum when this became Bino, Brexit in name only.
These same people who now blame remainers; welcomed Theresa May’s red lines, which made a Norwegian deal impossible, brought her down over a solution to Northern Ireland’s border, elected Boris Johnson and supported him when he broke his word on a border in the Irish Sea, negotiated this deal and cheered it to the rafters and then campaigned for and won an election on implementing this deal.
There was a way out of the EU that was peaceful, less economically damaging, kept many of the benefits, was less divisive and maintained the UK’s international reputation. The brexiteers blocked it at every turn and demanded the hardest possible Brexit. They got what they wanted and this is it.
