Blame Charles
I see that Marine Le Pen brought down the Barnier government in order to “prevent chaos”, which at least shows she has a sense of humour.
But the mess that Macron’s gamble on unnecessary elections created is here to stay. The far left want more spending and more taxes and the Far Right want lower taxes and lower spending or more probably higher spending on what it wants and lower spending somewhere else.
Whoever Macron finds to try to set up a new administration is left with that simple and intractable dilemma and there can be no more parliamentary elections until later next year.
What else can Macron do but to try to muddle through without a proper budget or side with the left or side with the right?
Frankly I blame Charles de Gaulle, in all other respects a political genius and my hero but the French constitution that he wrote is not fit for purpose.
Still Marine Le Pen is up on fraud charges soon, so that may provide a some comfort for the centre ground and the democrats, but it is thin gruel.
