Beyond Reach....
In the leadership debate there are plenty of issues that are not getting a mention. But one of the biggest issues is the downside of Brexit, apparently both candidates think it is a triumph.
Yet in the FT this week was a specific example of the damage it is continuing to inflict on British industry. The UK version of Reach, the EU’s chemical industry regulation system will now cost £2bn to introduce.
That is twice the original estimate and totally unnecessary, as the industry has already spent a fortune registering with the EU version and all the UK one does is copy the EU’s rules and regs.
So it will cost £2bn to introduce, does nothing and doubles red tape.
The UK cannot afford many more triumphs like this.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
