Asking nicely
It seems business organisations are having to learn to be clever. The road haulage industry’s request for visas for HGV drivers so they can deal with Brexit, has been turned down by the Business Secretary. Meanwhile the food and drink lobby are asking for visas for their staff for “covid recovery”.
A clever bit of PR that, as the government will never admit Brexit is causing problems. Meanwhile Labour is refusing to back more visas as well. It must fear being painted as the party of immigration. a sign of just how populist this government is and how the polling probably shows it is popular with potential voters. But even so not exactly brave or principled.
Whether the popularity of closing the borders to the help the country needs will last is another question.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
