Some of the reaction to the local election results has been interesting. With Tory MPs promising to fight, fight and fight again to stop a Labour government. Well, that is fine and even warning that Labour is not fit to run a government or would be bad for the country, is par for the course.
We have also always had a few Tory backbenchers, the ones who seem to want to spank young boy criminals and hang the rest, who would always predict that Labour would hand the country over to Moscow.
But now we have senior Tories, former members of the cabinet, warning that Labour is a hard left, socialist conspiracy that will turn the country into North Korea overnight. Ones who warn about Labour making the UK a “totalitarian state” under Sir Keir Starmer, that the borders will be thrown open, with unlimited immigration, Islamic law and all the rest.
Now I know they are desperate but this has easily got past the point where we should be worried. If they are willing to say this out loud what do they really think?
They obviously have convinced themselves that they are the only “true” patriots, that Brexit justifies almost everything and anything, that anyone else’s opinions are treason, that they are not incompetent but the victims of a left wing blob, which has thwarted their patriotic ambitions and betrayed democracy, Brexit and the Tory government.
Not a word of this is true nor is it true that they have stayed in the centre ground and everyone else has somehow shifted to the radical left, without any other party having changed policies much at all. The Tory party in its pathetic attempts to win the UKIP/Reform vote is the one that has shifted.
But this agenda is very dangerous, the Tory party has already tried to gerrymander the voting system, this is a slippery slope towards delaying and banning elections or refusing to admit the results of elections, or even trying to overthrow elections.
This is where Trump led the Republican party, the Tories are not far behind and they are a very long way from realising who are really the baddies.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

Maybe this piece was prompted by, inter alia, Braverman's broadcast comment over the weekend about 'far left maniacs' in a putative Starmer-led Labour government. Braverman and those for whom she is a willing mouthpiece are the real danger to this country's future.
"But this agenda is very dangerous, the Tory party has already tried to gerrymander the voting system, this is a slippery slope towards delaying and banning elections or refusing to admit the results of elections, or even trying to overthrow elections."
I've been saying since B Johnson was in Number 10 that there's nothing really compelling him to call an election, so why would he bother. He lied to the Queen's face, why would he be unduly burdened by some statute that he enacted that doesn't really lay out many consequences for disobeying?
I assumed Sunak would be more sensible, but he's demonstrated an unedifying shameless desperation to retain power and save face in his time as PM, that I could definitely envision the UK entering the war in Ukraine later this year, then declaring something like, 'it would be unhelpful to hold an election at this point'.
