Abdication....
Winston Churchill, rather stupidly, stood by Edward VIII and wanted him to remain as King. Even though the King’s romantic relationship was impossible for the country to accept.
But when Edward was forced to abdicate Churchill also said, let us hope he never realises what he has given up. In Edward’s case this was a pretty safe bet, he was shallow, vain, selfish and as thick as double cream.
Now look at the UK’s government: on the edge of Europe, waiting for invites to major summits, breaking international law, untrusted, with a shameful asylum system and with a PM no one trusts or likes.
Brexit did almost all that.
Now the government finds the time to knight a complete failure of a politician but not to impose sanctions on its criminal, fund raising mates.
It would be slightly comforting to think they are so vain, stupid and selfish not to realise what they have done to their country.
But they are not that thick.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
