A test run
The local elections are obviously going to be a test run for the new voter suppression law introduced by the Tory government. A law that is obviously specifically designed to cut the youth vote and maintain the elderly Conservative vote.
Since there was just one successful prosecution for electoral fraud at the last two elections maybe the Electoral Commission now has the time to investigate the Conservative Party’s attempt to have postal voters send their votes to them rather than the actual returning officer?
The conflict of interest and the possibility of massive electoral fraud is obvious, blatant and shameless. The Electoral Commission should be acting now to stop it and it should be researching how many fewer votes there are at the local election as a result of this vote rigging ID card legislation too.
But Labour and the Lib Dems have been far too quiet about this, like the Democrats in the US they need to respond now with a massive voter registration drive. This should be targeted at the young and the poor in particular, going door to door if necessary.
Then they and all the other political parties with a conscience need to promise that this law will be abolished with a one line bill the day after they win an election, if they can win an election.
Meanwhile, I think we can expect some tense scenes at Polling stations during the local elections; only then will millions of people find that their right to vote has been taken from them.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
