I do not feel any of the elation that I felt when Tony Blair swept into No. 10 this time. Maybe because there is so much work to do. The country is in such a mess and a great deal of it is permanent.
That is why I really do think it was a mistake of Sir Kier Starmer to rule out re-joining the EU in his life time. All of the economic and political problems of this country cannot be laid at the door of the Brexiteers but a great deal can.
Remember also that it was the same arrogance of the Brexit campaigners that gave us austerity, a shrunken state, a failing NHS and inadequate defence. They were the ones who whipped up immigration fever and racism and thank god it is them that have eventually paid the price.
But the Tory party will be back and we now have Farage in the Commons, well done David Cameron, and your 4 even worse successors, none of you were really up to the job.
You were wrong on everything that matters, you thought that being uncaring, hard faced, and nasty was someone a badge of honour or a sign that you were realistic and the country needed more realism.
You set out to destroy the welfare state and you have almost succeeded, you wanted to drag the country back to the 1950’s; thinking we could be a global power and you succeeded in making us the sick man of Europe again.
Thank god we won’t have to listen to any of them for a while now. It is not much but it is something.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

A period (or better still an eternity) of silence from the Rees-Mogg/Schapps/Mordaunt/Truss/Fox etc brigade is a ‘consummation devoutly to be wished’ and it’s wonderful to have even one wish come true (shame Hunt and McVey squeaked in). Party briefly, the long haul starts now.
