I would have more faith in the Prime Ministers plans to ban MPs working as consultants if it was not clear that you could drive a coach and horses through it. You could just employ the MP directly, put him or her on the board or hire their company to work for you.
The PM himself made “chickenfeed of £250k. a year for writing a weekly column for one paper and giving speeches. None of that seems likely to be banned and the second he retires he will become a millionaire overnight.
What then can he say to MPs from his own party trying to make money on the side, when he did it himself and fully intends to take full advantage of his position once he is out of office?
The simple fact is that the pay of top executives, lawyers, banker and all the rest has rocketed in recent years. Share schemes, bonuses, huge payouts for what used to be pretty average jobs mean they have lost contact with the vast majority of people who are just getting by.
Certain MPs think they are of a similar calibre and should be paid the same, even when they are second rate back benchers without an ounce of ambition. They even think that the only limit on their earnings should be the voters in their constituencies.
Easy enough to say when your constituency would elect a bag of manure with a blue ribbon.
Entitlement and total job security create corruption. Solve that and you solve the problem.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
Bravo, well said.
