85%
There is a mismatch between the Labour party supporters, 85% want to rejoin the EU and rising, and Labour party policy.
But then the Labour party leadership knows full well that the Brexiteers are waiting int he long grass to pounce on anything vaguely pro EU, no matter how sensible, as treason.
You can get a feel for the attacks that are coming from a recent example, Brexit supporters are now claiming that if the UK rejoined the EU we would have to adopt the Euro, face EU wide taxes, and be forced to join a European army. All are lies.
But on the other hand the chances of really solving the UK’s problems without movement on EU membership is very hard to see. It has cost us 5% of GDP, shattered. inward investment, slashed trade, damaged farming and fishing, destroyed regional development funding and much, much more. The London Stock Exchange is a shadow of its former self, checks at the border are about to be introduced on food goods and biometric testing of travellers is on the way.
Reversing any of those problems would really help the economy and the country, Labour must know this but cannot act. The obvious solution is to win the election and then to look at the books, the reports and the analysis that strangely enough this current government has never released.
That will be the perfect excuse to say that they had no idea things were so bad and urgent action is needed. On things like standards, barriers to trade, investment, border checks, travel, data sharing and all the rest.
But they will have to be quick, these things would really help the economy and Labour is going to need all the help it can get, immediately, to turn this mess around.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
