The fact that the 80th anniversary of D-Day coincided with the European elections and a general election in the UK is a stark reminder of how fragile peace and democracy are.
It seems that all that is necessary for Nazism to prosper is for the people who fought to destroy it to die of old age. The beautiful cemeteries of Normandy and the mass graves in pretty much every other part of the Europe that Hitler managed to get his hands on are evidence enough of the dangers of Nazism.
And yet it is once again on the rise. Praising the SS doesn’t put off voters, nor does dog whistle racism, which Mr. Farage specialises in. His latest shameless attempt was to claim that Rishi Sunak messed up in Normandy because he doesn’t “share OUR values”.
I am no friend of Mr. Sunak’s but he is a Brit and more of a true Brit than Farage, the man who sold his country down the river. But none of that will stop Mr. Farage. His plan is to take over the Tory party and turn it into a hard right, xenophobic, rump with which he intends to take over the country.
And if the few Tory MPs left after this election don’t put a stop to him, then he will succeed, because the rank and file membership of the Tory party are Farage supporters to a man and would vote him into the leadership in a second.
The fact that he has destroyed the Tory party won’t stop him, nor that he has returned to politics to ensure a larger Labour majority, nor the fact that he has racially insulted their current leader, nor that he loved Liz Truss’s policies, nor his dog whistle racism, nor his love of Russia and Hungary. Because they love that stuff.
The core of the Tory party has now been reduced to its minimum rump of gammons, climate change deniers, Brexiteers, bigots, and baby drowners.
Who will stop them? Where are the good men and women who will come to the aid of the party? I can’t see any out there.
80 years on.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.

His redemption arc is being carved by the BBC, in another example of their coveted balance, that seems to list endlessly right wards.
He got a seat on the prime time special of Question Time, even though he supposedly wasn’t standing, which now looks more and more like a personal campaign launch party.
Then they gave him additional time to speak to correct his faux pas on the all party debate - he lost the crowd briefly as he steered into his more audible dog whistles, so then was given the last word on the topic even though he’d already spoke, and was given his full pulpit to close the show.
