5 non tests
I know I have mentioned this before but I got some new information yesterday and checked a figure- so here goes again.
Rishi Sunak has set his government 5 goals:
Reduce inflation
Increase growth
Cut waiting lists
Cut immigration and
Cut debt
I previously thought three of these were totally cynical as they are going to happen anyway but now it turns out they all are.
Inflation is already falling
Growth will return once the recession is over
Waiting lists can hardly fail to fall now Covid is hopefully less of a problem
But the other two I thought might make some work but no, I was wrong.
The recent high figure for immigration of 500,000 pa was distorted by Ukrainian refugees, Hong Kong citizens with the right to flee Chinese oppression and mostly a backlog of foreign students turning up to University
This will therefore fall this year by a large amount, and finally the OBR has already predicted borrowing would start to fall in 2023-4, just in time for a general election.
So, if the cabinet does nothing but sit on its well padded chairs for two years all these things will happen.
You might want to compare this to Jucinda Ardern, who is standing down because the “tank is empty”, if anyone in the UK cabinet had her courage, ability, or self awareness and honesty they would have had to admit the whole government’s tank has been empty for years.
Certainly the UK’s PM, who can only set himself self fulfilling targets, is obviously running on empty.
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
