47 years and counting
Lord Frost’s latest claim, in an attack on the threat of “arch remainers”, is that since the UK was in the EU for 47 years we can only judge whether Brexit is a success 47 years after leaving.
The huge hole in this argument is that it was perfectly obvious long before the UK joined the EU that it was in the country’s economic benefit. It was also clear from day one of membership and for all 47 years of membership.
The very fact that leaving has caused economic damage equivalent to two very large recessions is even more evidence of that.
So why do Lord Frost, and many others, repeat this line?
Because, what it strongly suggests is that Brexiteers cannot defend Brexit’s economic benefits (as there aren’t any) and don’t expect to be able to, ever.
Or at least any time before 2068.
Trying to put off a political problem by kicking it down the road, is a well established practise.
But for 47 years?
Economics, trade and Brexit, not necessarily in that order but the dog always comes first.
